Exploring Ocean Indicators: Coordinating Efforts to Better Study, Monitor, and Predict Ocean States, Changes, and Processes

Session ID#: 11245

Session Description:
Ocean “indicators” capture key states, processes, trends, and/or variability in ocean properties that help us better understand, monitor, and predict the global ocean and it's interaction with the global climate system.  This town hall will discuss recent efforts (the U.S. Global Change Research Program’s Indicators Pilot and the Ocean Observations Panel for Climate (OOPC)  State of the Ocean) to develop indicators of ocean climate and health, foster a community discussion of next steps and priority areas for new indicators, and explore the idea developing a comprehensive ocean monitoring and indicators system.
Primary Contact:  Jennifer Saleem Arrigo, NOAA Climate Program Office, Silver Spring, MD, United States
Presenters:  Mark A Bourassa, Florida State University, Center for Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction Studies, Tallahassee, FL, United States, Eric J Lindstrom, NASA Headquarters, Washington, DC, United States and Katy Hill, GCOS/GOOS/WCRP Ocean Observations Panel for Climate
Co-Sponsor(s):
  • OD - Ocean Observing and Data Management
  • PO - Physical Oceanography/Ocean Circulation
