Session Description:
Major ecological changes in shorelines occur naturally (e.g., isostatic adjustment, sea level rise, species invasions) and as a consequence of human activities (e.g., dikes, seawalls, groins). Regardless of whether the causes have been natural or anthropogenic, coastlines that have served as critical habitats for migrating birds and as hatcheries and nurseries for aquatic organisms have been lost because tidal marshes, mangroves, dunes, coral reefs, and shellfish beds have been transformed in ways that threaten food web functionality. Although coastal wetland restoration is widespread in developed countries, economic and population pressures have constrained similar reclamation activities along the coasts of many developing countries and on coastlines utilized by indigenous communities.
Knowledge production in indigenous communities is dynamic, and is now challenged by the increasing speed of global change. The question arises how to use traditional knowledge in western science approaches and how to feed results from western science into the local knowledge systems to help communities to deal with changes in their environment that potentially threaten their livelihoods.
This session encompasses examples from developed and developing regions to provide innovative solutions and adaptations from western science approaches and traditional knowledge systems.
