Land-Sea Connections in the Global Carbon Cycle

Session Description:
Our knowledge of the global carbon cycle is rapidly evolving. Yet, carbon cycling in near-shore coastal regions is still not well understood, partly because of methodological difficulties but also due to its high complexity. For example, recent estimates of CO2 outgassing from surface waters in estuaries have increased several-fold suggesting that there are still large gaps in the coverage of carbon flux estimates across the aquatic continuum. Understanding the biogeochemical transformation of organic matter across land-sea connections will ultimately help to close these gaps. In this session, we seek to bring together research that improves our understanding of biogeochemical processes to better constrain the global carbon budget under past, present, and future climate scenarios. We invite contributions from all areas of carbon biogeochemistry that cut across ecosystem boundaries, covering studies from a wide range of latitudinal settings and spatiotemporal scales. Contributions that examine the mechanisms underlying observed patterns in distribution or rates of particulate and dissolved organic matter transformation, their linkage to CO2 outgassing/uptake and nutrient cycling across aquatic gradients are particularly encouraged.
