Ocean Science: Informing Policy, Management, and the Public

Session Description:
Bringing science to the forefront of policy discussions is important for sound decision-making and the sustainability of the world's oceans. Ocean science can inform policies to address some of the most challenging issues including ocean acidification, fisheries management, habitat alteration, and pollution. Understanding the interaction between humans, oceans and the important ecosystem services on which people rely requires a wide range of expertise, including the scientific community. Many scientists want to broaden the impact of their research, but don't know how or where to start. In this session, presenters will discuss how they've engaged with policy- and decision makers, what policy- and decision makers want to know, and what kinds of contributions scientists can make to policy development and implementation.
