Interdisciplinary observations of the biological carbon pump

Session Description:
Annually, the biological carbon pump transports 5 – 12 Pg C each year from the surface ocean to depth, a flux of similar magnitude to annual anthropogenic carbon emissions. Yet, we still lack understanding of the underlying mechanisms for carbon export that control variability in space and time. Advances in in situ observing and remote sensing have opened new avenues for studying the spatiotemporal dynamics of the ocean’s biological carbon pump. This session will focus on the application of autonomous observing, remote sensing algorithms and numerical modeling towards quantifying and investigating the biological carbon pump. This session will address biological, chemical and physical contributions to carbon export and its subsequent fate in the mesopelagic zone. We particularly welcome contributions describing new technological approaches and characterizing variability over a range of spatial and temporal scales.
