Framework for Ocean Observing: Community Review of Next Steps in Preparation for OceanObs ‘19

Session ID#: 30412

Session Description:
The need for interdisciplinary, internationally integrated ocean observations was a key recommendation of the OceanObs’09 Conference (oceanobs09.net). To address this need the Framework for Ocean Observing (Framework) was developed in 2012 (www.oceanobs09.net/foo). During the past five years the Framework has been adopted by the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) and used by a variety of groups to coordinate sustained global ocean observing efforts focused on Essential Ocean Variables (EOVs), Readiness Levels, and Best Practices to support science and societal needs.

This project is a focused 20-month community review effort designed to understand how the Framework has been used successfully, why it was used to support observing activities, and how it was (or not) able to assist in development and implementation.  This project will also explore how the Framework can be modified, or its scope expanded, to better support the successful evolution and implementation of ocean observing efforts.

This Town Hall meeting will review feedback provided thus far, how this effort relates to other activities such as the AtlantOS Blueprint project and OceanObs ’19 planning, and invite further comment on how best to enhance utility of the Framework.
