MPOWIR: Making the Most of Mentoring Relationships

Session ID#: 31436

Session Description:
MPOWIR (Mentoring Physical Oceanography Women to Increase Retention) is a community-led program providing mentoring to junior women in physical oceanography to improve their retention in the field.  The program has been active for over a decade offering mentoring through conferences and small groups, as well as speaking and internship opportunities.  MPOWIR recently conducted a community survey on mentoring needs.  Highlights of the survey results will be shared and discussed.  Motivated by the results of the survey, this townhall will provide proactive information for students and early career scientists on building and effectively utilizing mentoring relationships, and best mentoring practices for advisors.  A panel of individuals diverse in their career stages, employment type, and experiences will share their mentoring perspectives.  All members of the oceanographic community, regardless of gender or career stage, are encouraged to participate.  Lunch will be provided on a first come basis.
