GeoEthics and the Responsible Conduct of Scientists as Professionals and Educators

Session ID#: 36248

Session Description:
The concept of GeoEthics, the ethical, social and cultural implications of geoscience research and practice, is gaining traction within the geoscience community and provides a framework for exploring our ethical obligations as scientists and educators. This session examines our behaviors and attitudes as we interact with colleagues and students in the work environment, broadly defined to include offices, classrooms, labs, and the field, the latter of which is especially relevant for ocean scientists involved in long-term field deployments. It will also explore our obligations and obstacles to communicate information to the public, particularly in a charged political environment.

This will be an interactive town hall, inviting participants to discuss such issues as bullying, sexual harassment, and/or other coercive or abusive behaviors, as well as efforts to increase diversity and inclusion. Discussions may examine principles, case studies, and/or strategies to address these issues and may involve many interactions encountered by scientists throughout their careers (e.g. supervisor-worker, faculty-student, editor-author, individual-team).
