Advances and Opportunities in Global Ocean Science Education and Partnerships

Session ID#: 36299

Session Description:

The global ocean science education community has been rapidly expanding. In 2015, the Consortium for Ocean Science Exploration and Engagement (COSEE) initiated the Global Ocean Science Education Workshops in partnership with UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission and College of Exploration, bringing together four sectors: ocean scientists, education professionals, policymakers, and business leaders. One outcome has been the establishment of five international working groups with representation from over 30 nations.  Other efforts include The Galway Statement on Atlantic Ocean Cooperation (signed in 2013), which has increased Atlantic Ocean research partnerships and established a TransAtlantic Ocean Literacy working group; the European Union’s SeaChange Project; and the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography’s Global Outreach Initiative projects in ten countries and six continents. The efforts described above have advanced the profile of ocean science, highlighting the importance of ocean education to governments and policymakers world-wide. The audiences for this Town Hall are scientists, education professionals, policymakers, business leaders, learning scientists, and evaluators, who will engage in dialog related to new opportunities for collaborations and partnerships.  A panel of 5 speakers will initiate the discussions by sharing examples of international collaborative efforts related to project designs, resources, implementation strategies, and/or evaluation results.
