The Society for Women in Marine Science: How to bring SWMS to your institution

Session ID#: 36313

Session Description:
The Society for Women in Marine Science (SWMS) brings together marine scientists of all career levels to discuss the diverse experiences of women in marine science, celebrate the research done by women in the field, and promote the visibility of women in the marine science community.

The goal of this town hall is to provide information about SWMS and enable attendees to form or join chapters at their home institutions. SWMS is led by early career women and is particularly seeking graduate students and early career scientists who will spend at least one year as chapter leads.

We will provide background on SWMS since its foundation in 2014 at MIT and WHOI. We will discuss our successful pilot chapter at University of Rhode Island and our expansion via chapters at the Black Girls Dive Foundation, Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences, and University of Washington. We will also present our flexible structure for institution-specific chapters to meet the needs of their communities, and solicit discussion on how the steering committee can provide support to new chapters. Attendees will leave with the materials necessary to start a SWMS chapter at their home institution, with support from the central organization based at WHOI.
