Planet Microbe: Reconnecting ‘omics and environmental data for enhanced data discovery

Session ID#: 36353

Session Description:
Oceanographic research expeditions are a rich source of data, from microbial ‘omics to ocean biogeochemistry. However, the back deck is often the last time these data are together. Planet Microbe, a recent NSF EarthCube Building Block award, aims to reunite these diverse data types through a federated search platform that adaptively connects data repositories in ways that will enable data discovery and open data sharing for historical and on-going oceanography and geobiology sequencing efforts.

During this Town Hall, we will introduce Planet Microbe’s three-tiered data integration plan, demonstrate the current data discovery capabilities, and present our strategy to engage the community in the next several years of Planet Microbe’s continued testing and development. The majority of the Town Hall will be open discussion with OSM’s microbial ecology community. We encourage everyone to join the conversation and share ideas on how we can make our ‘omics data do more for the field.

Planet Microbe arose from a community identified need for data discovery during discussions around science/cyberinfrastructure challenges at the EarthCube End User Workshop (Aug 2013) and through the EarthCube Oceanography and Geobiology Environmental ‘Omics (ECOGEO) Research Coordination Network (RCN) (Aug 2014-Feb 2017).
