West Coast Ocean Assessment: Science for Effective West Coast Ocean Planning
West Coast Ocean Assessment: Science for Effective West Coast Ocean Planning
Session ID#: 36425
Session Description:
The West Coast Regional Planning Body (RPB) is a partnership between U.S. federal agencies, the three West Coast states, 13 federally-recognized tribal governments, and Pacific Fishery Management Council focused on coordination and planning for the ocean along the West Coast of the U.S. Initiated in 2013, the group is currently identifying ocean planning issues, data gaps, and mechanisms for coordination. A critical aspect of the RPB’s work is developing a Regional Ocean Assessment to identify science assets and needs to support effective planning. Ocean uses are being cross-referenced with an inventory of scientific studies available for the California Current. Through this effort the RPB will identify key needs for scientific support, such as energy siting, aquaculture, and shipping, among others. At a Town Hall Panel, the RPB would receive feedback on ways to address identified scientific gaps, develop appropriate research targets, and solicit potential scientific support. The target audience would be ocean researchers on the West Coast who could engage in a dialog on the RPB’s analysis to date and proposed next steps. Feedback received will guide development of assessment efforts moving forward, and help refine next steps for addressing science required for ocean planning on the West Coast.
