Ocean Research Related to Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, Maria, Nate, and Ophelia I Poster Lightning

Session ID#: 39091

Session Description:
The 2017 Hurricane season was extremely active and produced events of historic proportion. Three storms made landfall in the United States after causing devastation to numerous Caribbean nations. Hurricane Harvey arrived as a Category 4 near Rockport, Texas, on 26 August 2017, followed by Hurricane Irma on 10 September 2017 arriving at the Florida Keys and then Marco Island, on Florida’s west coast, and finally Category 1 Hurricane Nate, which made two landfalls, first at the mouth of the Mississippi River and then at Biloxi, MS on 7-8 October 2017. Hurricane Maria devastated several Caribbean Islands before arriving in Puerto Rico as a high-end Category 4 storm on 20 September 2017 and Hurricane Ophelia arrived in the British Isles 16 October 2017 after becoming a rare Category 3 Eastern Atlantic Hurricane. Each storm had distinct characteristics.

This session seeks contributions focusing on the ocean’s impact on and response to these storms, including; oceanographic, atmospheric, and climatic factors; data collection methods and assimilation techniques; remote sensing; impacts on the coastal biological and physical environment and human health; and policy implications.
