Abstract:
Much information can potentially be extracted from numerically simulated cumulus clouds through suitable diagnostics. Here, we describe the use of Lagrangian particles embedded in cloud-resolving models to construct Lagrangian views of cumulus clouds that complement the Eulerian statistics. The utility and issues of this approach will be discussed, as well as applications to understanding linear response functions of cumulus convection and the role of cold pools in spawning new convection during the transition from shallow to deep convection.
