Computing Sensitivity Kernels of Noise Correlations with Respect to Noise Sources

Abstract:
Seismic noise correlations are now commonly used to reconstruct the Green functions of the medium. Although traveltimes extracted from such data have been extensively used to image of the Earth interior, only a few studies have attempted to exploit the amplitudes. In this work, we compute the sensitivity kernels of noise correlations with respect to the distribution of noise sources in PREM. This allows us to investigate to what extent the surface waves reconstructed by noise correlations can be used to retrieve the anelastic attenuation of the medium.
