ED34C:
Implementing K-12 Geoscience with the Next-Generation Science Standards II
Session ID#: 8268
Session Description:
Adoption of the Next Generation Science Standards by many states and school districts is creating significant challenges for the teaching of geoscience. The focus on scientific practices, incorporation of engineering principles, inclusion of real geoscience data and evidence, emphasis on Earth Systems Science, and year of high school geoscience are all part of an enormous shift from current practices in how K-12 geosciences are taught, and will require significant assistance from the academic, national, and professional research and education communities. This session will address the many different ways we can aid and assist in the optimal implementation of NGSS geosciences at multiple K-12 levels. Abstracts are encouraged that address the NGSS in the areas of 1) curriculum development, including research-based data and activities; 2) professional development; 3) assessment; 4) post-secondary ESS education; 5) ESS educational research; 6) Informal Science education programs; and 7) the integration of science, engineering, and technology.
