Session Description:
A key goal of several successive NSF education programs  (e.g., TUES, IUSE, and GeoPaths) has been to support active learning strategies to engage undergraduates in learning about the earth, ocean and atmospheric sciences. The NSF also supports faculty development opportunities to build communities of adopters of best practices and resources. The broader impacts of research programs also support activities to make cutting edge research findings accessible to faculty and students. This session seeks to highlight accomplishments and impacts of past and current NSF-funded efforts to improve the quality of undergraduate geoscience education. Projects focused on recruiting geoscience majors, increasing retention, broadening participation, and identifying skills for preparing students for the workforce and graduate study are encouraged to share their successful strategies and models. The session welcomes contributions that describe implementation of recommendations coming from the "Second Summit on the Future of Geoscience Education" (http://www.jsg.utexas.edu/events/future-of-geoscience-undergraduate-education/) about educational needs in our community.
