Pedagogical Approaches and Assessment Strategies for Implementing NGSS in Earth System Science Posters

Session Description:
For many years cognitive science has offered insights into student learning that have shaped educational practices. Building off this work, a number of effective pedagogical approaches can help instructors implement the NGSS in Earth System Science. These include model-based inquiry (Stewart, J. et. al 2005), the claim-evidence-reasoning framework (McNeill, K. & Krajcik, J., 2011) place-based learning (Van der Hoeven Kraft,et. al., 2011) use of metacognitive strategies, backwards design, the incorporation of real-time data and current societal issues in teaching (McNeal, K. et. al., 2014, Monet & Greene, 2012) and others (Ellins et. al, 2014). In addition, several science education researchers have led assessment efforts that provide strategies particularly useful for evaluating the three-dimensional learning that is central to NGSS (Penuel, W. 2016; McNeill K.L., et.al., 2015). We invite curriculum developers, informal science educators, inservice & preservice program providers, practicing K-12 ESS teacher leaders, and geoscience education researchers to present.
