Freshwater Salinization Syndromes: Causes, Consequences, and Management Posters

Session Description:
Salinization of fresh water is a global, continental, regional, and local water quality issue impacting many aquatic ecosystems around the world.  Anthropogenic inputs of salts and accelerated weathering from a variety of causes increase a syndrome of impacts in humid regions including watersheds impacted by urbanization, agriculture, and mining. Fresh waters in arid regions have elevated salinity due to irrigation and hydrologic modifications.  Coastal watersheds are impacted by sea level rise and saltwater incursion. We invite submissions on the sources of salinity, the physical or chemical controls on salinization (or alkalinization), the interactive impacts of climate change on salinization, or the biogeochemical and ecological impacts of salinization (e.g. effect on nutrient cycling, metals, organics, and microbial structure). We also invite research on management or innovative solutions to control salinization and protect environmental and public health.
