OS31E:
Integrated Observations and Modeling of Surface Currents, Waves, and Winds Posters
Submit an Abstract to this Session
Session ID#: 53113
Session Description:
Ocean surface winds, waves, and currents play important roles in vertical fluxes of momentum, energy, and tracers. These variables, and their gradients are strongly coupled with the atmospheric and oceanic boundary-layers (BL). This section focuses on the utilization of observations and modeling of surface winds, waves, and currents to improve our understanding of BL processes, including coupling with the free atmosphere and through the ocean’s thermocline. From an observational point of view, community efforts to observe these surface variables have led to proposals for satellite Doppler oceanography (e.g the Sea surface KInematics Multiscale monitoring satellite mission, SKIM and the Winds and Currents Mission), which, if funded, could provide for the first time measurements of Stokes drift and absolute surface velocity at global scales. Air-sea coupling, in a manner that includes the relatively vigorous coupling on scales <70 km, is expected to be critical for improving longer-term atmospheric forecasts.
