B51J:
Land Management in the Earth System: Measurements and Models Posters

Submit an Abstract to this Session

Session ID#: 56822

Session Description:
Recent estimates suggest that 80% of Earth's ice-free land is actively being managed by humans. Land management decisions, including harvest strategies, species selection, fertilization, irrigation, tillage regimes, and fire management, among others, have profound impacts on the terrestrial biosphere’s provisioning of ecosystem services such as carbon uptake, water retention, and habitat diversity and strongly influence climate by altering local biogeochemical and biogeophysical processes. Further, the impact from these management actions on ecosystem and climate may be scale dependent. We present abstracts that advance theory, observations, and models of management practices at regional to global scales, including those that demonstrate progress in mapping of management by remote sensing, explore socio-ecological theories of macrosystem processes influenced by management, implement new land use practices in Earth system models, and quantify impacts from these advances on forecasts of global nutrient cycling, biodiversity, watershed regulation, and climate feedbacks resulting from land management.
