ED12A:
Aiming for Truly Diverse Diversity to Strengthen the Geoscience Community II

Submit an Abstract to this Session

Session ID#: 59264

Session Description:
The geosciences continue to lag other STEM disciplines in the engagement, recruitment, and retention of traditionally underrepresented and underserved groups. Diversity is a vital priority because it promotes innovation, strengthens the community's ability to tackle complex geoscience problems, and engenders widespread Earth science literacy. The geosciences need to develop an inclusive environment that proactively values individuals of all backgrounds, genders, sexualities, abilities, etc., and encourages them to bring their whole person to the discipline.  In spite of recent funding initiatives dedicated to strengthening education outcomes, diversity, and inclusiveness in STEM, there remains much room for improvement.  In this session, we invite sharing of programs that provide training in key skills and competencies, engage participants in experiential training, and foster inclusive environments to attract, retain, and prepare geoscience students from underrepresented groups. We seek examples, best practices, and innovative steps aimed at all aspects of diversity and inclusion across the geosciences.
