Food–Energy–Water Nexus in a Changing World I

Session Description:
Quantifying the interdependence of food, energy, and water is critical considering increasing intensity of droughts and floods globally. Considerable research is being conducted on the food–energy– water (FEW) nexus, with some focusing on new approaches for managing these resources. Hower, many challenges remain in scientific research on the FEW nexus, with implementation as a management tool just beginning. Developing integrated software platforms and tools for systematic analysis of the FEW nexus can be an important initial step. This session calls for contributions that will help with such tool development: FEW interactions and modeling, on local, regional, national, continental, and global spatial scales; comparision among regions/countries; linkages to climate extremes, policy implications and the FEW nexus for sustainable development, among others. The session should advance our current understanding of the FEW nexus in coupled human and natural systems, and provides thoughts for improving efficiency and sustainability in regional FEW use.
