Session Description:
Biogeochemical processes in soils and sediment are modulated by hydrological, climatic, biological and other environmental drivers that vary over space and on time scales from decades to minutes. It is increasingly recognised that temporal, sometimes oscillatory, environmental changes exert major controls on the functioning of soils and sediments, as well as on their interactions with the atmosphere, surface and groundwater.
In this session, we seek to illustrate the rich complexity of soil and sedimentary environments and how they respond to recent variations in environmental conditions caused by, for example, flooding, desiccation, water table fluctuations, groundwater discharge, bioturbation, freeze-thaw cycles, wave disturbance, contamination, eutrophication, rhizosphere activity and storms. The session will facilitate the exchange of concepts, data, measurement techniques and modelling approaches between scientists interested in advancing the understanding of soil and sediment biogeochemistry across temporal scales.
