Most Watersheds Are Not Pristine! Recognizing and Differentiating Natural From Human-Induced Hydrological, Geomorphological, and Biogeochemical Dynamics

Session Description:
The ultimate goals of Hydrology, Geomorphology and Biogeochemistry are to provide tools to resolve water-related problems faced by Society. Most process studies have however been done in quasi-pristine, small watersheds due to the easier deployment of field instrumentation. The focus of the scientific community is now shifting to non-pristine landscapes, especially areas where surface drains, tile drains, storage ponds, farm dams, berms and other types of stormwater-control infrastructure modify overall watershed response in ways that are poorly understood. Understanding the increasing role of humans on watershed systems is also one of the goals of Panta Rhei, the 2013-2022 scientific decade of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences. We therefore invite contributions that address the monitoring, modelling or management of the impacts of human infrastructure on watershed processes. We especially welcome contributions that suggest methods for partitioning the different sources of short-term and long-term change in watershed behaviour.
