CD44B:
Land-Ocean Linkages Along Shallow Coastlines Under Human Impact I Posters

Session ID#: 27649

Session Description:
Coastal wetlands including the adjacent shallow offshore areas are of high ecological and recreational value. At the same time, they are heavily impacted by direct and indirect effects of anthropogenic activities such as drainage and eutrophication. In addition, the anticipated climate change and sea level rise will strongly alter their hydro(geo)logy as well as the biogeochemistry of soils and coastal sediments alike. Nutrient transport and turnover across the land-sea continuum is driven by hydraulic connectivity, sediment structure, and microbial activity. Plant and animal life along shallow coasts is impacted by submarine groundwater discharge and sediment transport on the seaside and flooding with saltwater on the landside, both of which change the species composition, diversity and overall biomass. Moreover, wave action and currents modify the sediment integrity and fluxes to the water column. To understand the details of the processes and their interrelations on land and in the coastal ocean, field studies, experiments, and model evaluations are likewise necessary. We therefore invite presentations from all scientific areas focusing on land-sea interactions across the coastal continuum. Interdisciplinary studies linking, for instance, hydrodynamics with biogeochemistry are highly welcome.
