E24B:
Tidal River Dynamics: Observation, Prediction, and Modeling II Posters

Session ID#: 28249

Session Description:
Tidal rivers mark a transition between land and sea and are a vital but little studied component of the freshwater-marine continuum. From the land, river flow varies over meteorological, seasonal, and longer-term time scales. From the sea, astronomical tides but also other meteorological and oceanographic signals such as storm surges and sea-level rise affect water levels. Being externally forced by such multi-scale nonstationary signals and interacting nonlinearly with bottom friction and basin topography, river tides remain poorly understood and confound both current analysis methods and dynamical understanding. The goal of this session is to bring together contributions that document and/or seek to explain tidal river dynamics from a theoretical, observational or modeling perspective. Presentations are welcomed into any aspect of the hydrodynamics of tidal rivers, including tidal dynamics, frictional interactions, topographic and floodplain effects, flood waves and river flow, tidal discharges, storm surges, and any other topic related to dynamics in the tidal freshwater zone. Novel approaches to the analysis and prediction of nonstationary tides and the estimation of tidal discharges are also welcome, as well as studies focusing on their consequences on sediment transport dynamics, water quality, salinity intrusion, flood risks and mitigation, and anthropogenic and climate change impacts.
