OC34A:
Advances in Field and Laboratory Approaches to Measuring the Response of Organisms and Species Assemblages to Ocean Change I Posters

Session ID#: 28732

Session Description:
Recently, a growing number of studies have focused on the combined effects of ocean acidification, warming, deoxygenation and other environmental or ecological factors influencing organism and ecosystem performance. Commensurate with advancements in autonomous sensor technology has been a deeper appreciation for the ranges of conditions to which organisms are exposed and the potentially complex influence of multiple changing parameters. More sophisticated and increasingly complex experimental approaches are emerging to support both laboratory and field experiments, to incorporate multiple variables, accommodate longer exposures (acclimatization, multi-generational, etc), and more realistically emulate organisms’ physical and ecological environments. In addition, we have seen expansion in the capacity for ‘natural experiments’ structured around quantifiable gradients in these same drivers in situ. This session will include presentations that highlight promising new experimental approaches and methods that span field and laboratory to more effectively and accurately assess the direct and indirect consequences of ocean change in marine ecosystems.
